Ninja Recognition: Shaun Esch

Why Shaun?

This month we’re shining the spotlight on Shaun, who’s been part of our CrossFit 8 Mile family since 2020—right before COVID hit. From day one, he’s been an incredible member of our community, and we’re lucky to have him.

Shaun is one of those athletes who shows up, puts in the work, and does it all with a great attitude. He’s kind, supportive, and always encouraging to those around him. On the workout floor? He’s been crushing workouts left and right—and if there’s rowing or running involved… good luck keeping up.

What really sets Shaun apart is his humility and coachability. He listens, applies feedback, and continues to improve while staying grounded and positive.

Shaun, we appreciate your consistency, your effort, and the energy you bring to the gym. Congrats on being our newest Ninja Recognition—well deserved!

Your CrossFit Story: How did you get started?

In the beginning of 2020 I was looking for something new. I had been distance running primarily for about 5 years and felt like I had accomplished the majority of the goals I had laid out for myself. I wanted something different than I was doing. I was looking for something that was instructor-led with high intensity workouts and opened around my work schedule. I dropped into a CrossFit class with my sister about a year earlier and started with a local search of gyms. Nick was the first to respond to my email. I did my Elements onboarding with Ellie and a couple weeks of 730pm classes with Mark before business shutdown temporarily, but I was hooked. The programming fit what I was looking for, the coaches were knowledgeable and approachable, and the community of athletes were welcoming.

Why do you continue to do crossfit?

I continue with CrossFit because it fits what I am looking for in fitness. I stay with 8 Mile, as it has been an easy place to maintain the consistency I want, provides challenges and structure, and gives me the opportunity to push myself.

Favorite movements:

Running, Rowing, DB Snatch, Double Unders

Least favorite movements:

Snatch (barbell), Wall Walks, Thrusters.

Goals:

To be a healthy example for my kids … and do a bar muscle up would be neat.
