The Biggest Myths About CrossFit (And What Actually Happens)

Walk into just about any gym and you'll hear the debate.

"CrossFit is dangerous."

"You can't build muscle doing CrossFit."

"I just want to lift weights. I don't need all that cardio."

If you've ever considered trying CrossFit, chances are you've heard at least one of those.

The truth? There isn't one perfect way to train. Traditional gyms have their place. Bodybuilding has its place. Powerlifting has its place. Pilates has its place.

But there are also a lot of misconceptions about CrossFit that keep people from ever experiencing what it truly has to offer.

At CrossFit 8 Mile, we've been helping people transform their health and fitness for 13 years. During that time, I've coached thousands of classes and worked with everyone from complete beginners and busy parents to competitive athletes, firefighters preparing for the CPAT, and adults in their 70s who simply wanted to stay active.

The one thing they all have in common?

Every one of them started somewhere.

And that's exactly what CrossFit 8 Mile has been about from day one.

Our goal has never been to create CrossFit Games athletes.

Our goal has always been to help ordinary people become stronger, healthier, more confident, and more capable than they were yesterday.

Let's clear up a few of the biggest myths.

Myth #1: You Need Traditional Weightlifting to Build Muscle

Can you build muscle lifting weights on machines?

Absolutely.

Can you build muscle doing CrossFit?

Without question.

The difference is how you're building it.

CrossFit is built around functional movements that recruit multiple muscle groups at once. Instead of isolating one muscle at a time, you're squatting, pressing, pulling, carrying, climbing, rowing, and moving the way your body was designed to move.

The result isn't just bigger muscles.

It's a stronger, more capable body.

At CrossFit 8 Mile, we've watched members who could barely perform an air squat eventually deadlift hundreds of pounds, complete their first pull-up, or accomplish things they once believed were impossible.

Strength isn't just something you see in the mirror.

It's something you experience every day.

Myth #2: CrossFit Is Only for Elite Athletes

This is probably the biggest misconception of them all.

People watch the CrossFit Games and assume every CrossFit gym looks like that.

It doesn't.

Watching the CrossFit Games and assuming every CrossFit gym looks like that is like watching the Olympics and assuming your local high school track meet looks the same.

At CrossFit 8 Mile, our youngest athletes are teenagers. Our oldest members are in their 70s.

Some members are training for competitions.

Others are simply trying to lose weight, lower their blood pressure, get off medications, have enough energy to keep up with their kids, or stay independent as they age.

Every workout is scalable.

Never done a pull-up?

We'll teach you.

Can't squat below parallel?

We'll modify it.

Never touched a barbell?

We'll show you exactly how.

Whether you're 25 or 75, every workout is adjusted to fit where you are today, not where someone else is.

One of the things that means the most to me is reading our Google, Facebook, and Instagram reviews. One theme comes up over and over again. People tell us they were intimidated before walking through the doors, but within minutes they realized CrossFit 8 Mile wasn't about egos, it was about encouragement. They found coaches who cared, members who cheered them on, and a community that genuinely wanted to see them succeed.

That's exactly the culture we've worked hard to build.

Myth #3: CrossFit Is Too Intense

People hear "high intensity" and picture someone lying on the floor after class.

That's not what intensity means.

Intensity is relative.

For one person, intensity might be walking briskly for ten minutes.

For another, it might be lifting a heavy barbell.

Everyone is working hard.

They're just working at their version of hard.

Walk into any CrossFit 8 Mile class and you'll probably see someone deadlifting over 300 pounds next to someone learning the movement with a technique bar.

Guess what?

Both athletes are getting exactly the workout they need. Our needs vary by degree, not by kind.

That's what great coaching looks like.

And that's why CrossFit works for such a wide range of people.

One of the biggest advantages of CrossFit is efficiency. In a single one-hour class you're building strength, improving conditioning, increasing mobility, and developing skills that transfer into everyday life.

For busy parents, professionals, first responders, and families trying to squeeze fitness into an already packed schedule, that's hard to beat.

Myth #4: CrossFit Is Dangerous

This myth refuses to go away. Even after the U.S. Supreme court found the NSCA guilty for falsifying studies as part of a smear campaign against CrossFit.

Here's the reality.

Poor coaching is dangerous.

Poor movement is dangerous.

Any exercise performed incorrectly carries risk, whether it's a leg press, bench press, deadlift, or simply picking up a heavy box off the floor.

The difference isn't the movement.

It's the coaching and execution.

Every class at CrossFit 8 Mile is coach-led.

We teach every movement before the workout begins.

We demonstrate proper mechanics.

We scale workouts appropriately.

We make adjustments based on the individual standing in front of us.

After coaching CrossFit for more than 15 years, I've become convinced that good coaching, not fancy equipment, is what changes lives.

That's reflected in so many of our reviews. Members consistently talk about the attention they receive from our coaching staff, how they're corrected when needed, encouraged when they're struggling, and celebrated when they accomplish something they never thought they could.

That's how injuries are minimized.

That's how confidence is built.

Myth #5: CrossFit Doesn't Give You Enough Cardio

Think about a workout that combines rowing, wall balls, kettlebell swings, carries, and jump rope.

Your heart doesn't know whether you're running on a treadmill or carrying a sandbag.

It just knows it's working.

One of the biggest benefits of CrossFit is that you don't have to choose between getting stronger or improving your conditioning.

You build both at the same time.

Now, let's be clear.

If your goal is to run a marathon, you'll need to spend significant time training specifically for a marathon.

If your goal is to squat three times your bodyweight, you'll need specialized strength programming.

Specific goals require specific training.

But for the overwhelming majority of people who simply want to become healthier, leaner, stronger, and more capable, CrossFit provides one of the best returns on your training time.

If you've been on the fence about trying CrossFit because of something you've heard online or from a friend, here's my advice:

Come see it for yourself.

Don't judge CrossFit by a highlight reel of elite athletes or a viral video on social media. Judge it by walking into a class, meeting the coaches, and talking with the people who are doing it every day.

At CrossFit 8 Mile, you'll find teachers, nurses, firefighters, police officers, engineers, parents, grandparents, college students, and people who never thought they'd step foot inside a CrossFit gym.

Some are lifting heavy.

Some are using lighter weights.

Some are walking while others are running.

Everyone is working toward the same goal: becoming a little stronger, a little healthier, and a little better than they were yesterday.

No one expects you to be fit before you start.

That's our job.

Our job is to coach you, encourage you, challenge you when you're ready, and meet you exactly where you are.
